Programme Overview

This qualification is grounded in te ao Māori and is intended for learners who hold a foundational understanding of te reo Māori and who aspire to uphold and contribute to its ongoing development — kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori. The programme affirms te reo Māori as a taonga and positions language learning as an expression of identity, relationships, and responsibility. The learning journey is guided by the interrelated pou of mana tangata, mana whenua, mana reo, and mana ao tūroa, recognising that language is inseparable from people, place, and worldview. Through culturally responsive teaching and learning practices, tauira are supported to develop confidence in using foundation-level te reo Māori in ways that are tika, respectful, and meaningful.

You'll learn about

Strengthening your foundation in te reo Māori while deepening your connection to te ao Māori. You will learn how to use everyday reo Māori vocabulary and simple grammatical structures to confidently express who you are, where you come from, and how you relate to others.

Through guided learning and practical application, you will explore how te reo Māori reflects relationships to whenua, taiao, and significant places and people. You will develop an emerging understanding of how to use te reo respectfully and appropriately in a range of settings, recognising te reo Māori as a living taonga with cultural integrity.

You will also apply your language skills in real-life contexts, supporting you to complete simple tasks in personal, community, and workplace environments. By the end of the programme, you will be building confidence in your reo, strengthening your cultural awareness, and contributing positively to the ongoing vitality of te reo Māori — kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori.

You'll be able to

Mana Tangata

Use foundation-level te reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures to express personal identity, relationships, and values, demonstrating an emerging sense of confidence and respect for self and others.

Mana Whenua

Use foundation-level te reo Māori to express connections to whenua, taiao, significant places, and people of an area, acknowledging local contexts and the importance of whakapapa and belonging.

Mana Reo

Apply knowledge of foundation-level te reo Māori in selected contexts, demonstrating appropriate language use and an emerging understanding of the cultural significance and integrity of te reo Māori.

Mana Ao Tūroa

Use foundation-level te reo Māori to complete simple, practical tasks in specified personal, community, or workplace contexts, reflecting an understanding of te reo Māori as a living language within the wider world.

This qualification provides a culturally grounded pathway for learners to strengthen their reo Māori capability, deepen their connection to te ao Māori, and progress toward further learning or purposeful use of te reo Māori in everyday life and professional environments.

Entry Requirements

To enroll in this programme, a pontential student must:

Be at least 16 years of age

Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

Reside in New Zealand

Have little knowledge of te reo Māori
